Twisted Metal Season 2 Premiere Review

Twisted Metal Season 2

Hey, hey, hey Basement Dwellers! The Dace Man is back with another review, or I guess more so recap, and thought process from the world of entertainment! Today The Dace Man looks at the 3-episode Premiere of Twisted Metal Season 2!

In a trend that is all too common across new episodes for new seasons, Twisted Metal Season 2 returned with a three episode drop. Now here at Basement Protocol we'd like to review the premieres and then go back at the end of the season and review the entire season through and through. However, since twisted metal 2 dropped on Peacock with three episodes you're going to get 3 episodes and yours truly will try to keep up on a weekly episodic review of Twisted Metal Season 2 unlike what I did for Rick and Morty.

John in Twisted Metal
John Dough, Pizza Delivery.

So, I believe the strategy for the show this season is to introduce more of the twisted metal brand characters into the franchise and show. In doing so we kind of get a flashback of John’s past that introduces a sister as well as to see where John is currently where quiet is currently and what happened when quiet joined up with Dollface. John works on a plan to escape the city and get back on the road to flying Quiet uh meanwhile quiet and dull face are looking to enter a tournament that was just introduced by Calypso the main antagonist of the twisted metal franchise which I'm excited that they finally debuted. Also, it was excellent casting on their part to put Anthony Carrigan as the main villain. The comedy is on point for this episode it reestablishes you and reemerges you into the twisted metal franchise this episode gets an 8 out of 10 stairs and we are kicking off season 2.

In the second episode of these three episodes premiere we get more information on the dual phase group as well as what quiet it's been up to what John's been up to but it also introduces Mr. Grimm at the very end of the episode. Most of this episode establishes where the relationship is between John and Quiet with John trying to convince Quiet to flee with him to this cabin while Quiet tries to convince him why she needs to enter the tournament for the wish. Of the three episodes I believe this is kind of the weaker one, but it also introduces a young Mayhem into the episode and a future driver within the tournament too.

Even though this happens to be the weaker of the three episodes in this premiere it did have one of the funniest jokes I think I've seen in a long time across any show. In the opening flashback scene with doll face and other women organizing against men who are kind of leading the post-apocalyptic world there is just a subtle joke of the women strategizing in a bathroom, but the men sitting in the table and literally saying “All right time to measure our penises.”, It certainly wasn't the most subtle of jokes but for whatever reason I ended up laughing for a longer time than I anticipated. I give the episode 7 out of 10 stairs.

In the last episode of our premiere test drive Mr. Grimm escaped the asylum and murdered several people in a cemetery as he flees on his motorcycle he has retrieved, they all make their way to Diesel City. We get introduced to Axel and basically the tournament is just on the horizon we now have Axel, Grimm, Doll Face, Mayhem and Roadkill ready to go.

Meanwhile, throughout all three episodes sweet tooth is making his way across country to this tournament even though he initially had the idea to kill all these drivers to be known as the most feared driver out there. Through Sweet Tooth adventures they also introduced the driver Big Baby, and ultimately kill him, but Sweet Tooth is clearly going to factor into this tournament heavily since he was the face of the franchise every cover. Episode 3 gets a 8 out of 10 stairs from me.

I do feel as if Twisted Metal Season 2 came out swinging. However, I can't help but feel in an age where writing and directing are so disconnected from the studio that there's no way a weekly episodic release would have made sense if they just gave us one episode. This isn't necessarily this specific shows problem but it's a problem across streaming services as we move to the future.

We had one model where a streaming service would drop everything at once you would binge it and then have to wait multiple years before you got a second part to it, and then you have the old school model where you got weekly episodic same timed episodes that understood how to start and tell the story for that specific week. I personally am not a fan of this current model that is a hybrid of both models that happened a few years ago and I hope that we return to an age where it is either weekly episodic which I prefer, and each episode can stand alone while progressing the story or they just say OK here's everything.

The remainder of the season will see 2 episodes drop on August 7th, 2 episodes drop on August 14th, 2 episodes drop on August 21st, and finally 3 episodes drop on August 28th. The show is only getting about a month's run for all 12 episodes whereas this would have been a three-month run on the old model. Lumping the premier into one rating I would give it a 9 out of 10 stairs, but it does bother me that it had to give you 3 episodes to get you through the premiere.
