Happy Gilmore 2 Review

Happy Gilmore 2 Review

Hey, hey, hey Basement Dwellers! The Dace Man is back with another review, or I guess more so recap, and thought process from the world of entertainment! Today The Dace Man takes to the green and reviews Happy Gilmore 2!

Queue the Lynyrd Skynyrd because after 19 years Happy Gilmore is back. Netflix commissioned Adam Sandler to bring back the 1996 cult classic Happy Gilmore and give it a sequel. In Part 2 of Happy Gilmore’s journey, we now see him as a father to four boys and one girl married happily to Julie Bowen’s character living life at the best he can. That is until he goes, and the spoiler alert, kills his wife. After that happy has a downward spiral removing him from the game of golf altogether and putting him back into a lower position than he was at the first Happy Gilmore. Kind of lazy writing but you know it's an Adam Sandler movie so you should understand what you're getting out of this.

Now the whole premise of Julie Bowen’s character being dead I kind of called out in the trailer when Netflix released it. The reason I said this is because the Julie character is always looking on it happy and never next to happy in the trailer and she always looks concerned which makes sense because happy falls from grace and becomes an alcoholic because of killing his wife with a game of golf.

The movie itself puts happiness into a position again where he needs to earn money and earn money fast to help someone within his family. The subplot of the movie is that there's a new firm called Maxi Golf that is taking the Happy Gilmore style from 1996 and amplifying it to make golf interesting. The film is loaded with cameos from Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, Becky Lynch, Steve Buscemi and so many more, like I'm not even scratching the surface on the number of cameos there's Eminem, Rob Schneider and MJF to add a few more people. The only noticeable absence is Alan Covert who played the original caddy to happy in the first movie.

The film also manages to pay homage to those actors that have passed like Carl weathers and Happy's grandmother and Happy's former boss by bringing in other actors to play descendants While also leaning heavily of showing archive footage or clips from the original Happy Gilmore. The entire film is a nostalgia rush with a little bit of A twist of new jokes added on top as in updating Happy's happy place and things like shooter McGavin's descent into madness. Also take an opportunity to expand the Ben Stiller character from the first movie that also appeared in Hubie Halloween.

All in all, this is just your typical Adam Sandler flick. Now critics will bash this as just a rehash and money grab of the original Happy Gilmore which I don't know how it's a money grab if it's on Netflix. The thing I believe is happening is Adam Sandler’s being held to a higher standard that he was not held to in the 90s and he's just reproducing what he did in the 90s to today and it's not hitting the way it hit before. Society tends to look at these films from his early years such as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Little Nicky and Waterboy and view them through rose tinted glasses. While Happy Gilmore 2, Hubie Halloween and some of his other films as of late are on par for what Adam Sandler comedy is.

I think possibly Adam Sandler is tainted by his comedy a bit too because he's a decent serious actor which by doing that now you hold him to a higher standard of performance and writing and are disappointed with the results.

When it comes to Happy Gilmore 2 yours truly is going to give this a 5 out of 10 stairs rating. Now you're probably asking yourself “Why did Dace go with a middle of the road rating for this film?” and that's because that's what it is. It hit all the points you wanted it to hit but at the same time did nothing new or inventive for Adam Sandler. It was a good movie, not a great movie, not a bad movie, just an Adam Sandler good movie. If you're a fan of the first one I feel like you won't be disappointed but not going to win any awards. I will throw props to you Bad Bunny’s character though because that guy was hilarious.
